Are you tired of answering "How are you?" with the usual "I´m fine"? Sometimes it can be difficult to express how you are feeling. When feeling great, don´t just reply with "Great", surprise natives and learn some new, real life expressions.


Today we have eight different idioms to express happiness and to make your English more exciting. The colourful illustrations from Kaplan below will help you remember each of them.


How to use these expressions

1. [to have] A whale of a time have /a very good/an exciting/ a fun time

  • How was your birthday party?

  • It was great thanks. All my friends and family were there, we were playing games and dancing, we really had a whale of a time!

2. [to be] On cloud nine very happy, cheerful

  • I passed my English exam! I´m on cloud nine!

3. [to be] Tickled pink very much pleased or entertained

  • I suggest picking some flowers for your girlfriend. I’m sure she’ll be tickled pink and she won’t refuse your proposal.

4. [to be] On top of the world feeling wonderful, glorious, ecstatic

  • He has been sitting on top of the world since he got that promotion.

5. [to be] Happy as a clam very happy and comfortable

  • I was happy as a clam when my parents went on holiday and left me alone in the house.

6. [to be] Buzzing excited for something that’s going to happen

  • I’m buzzing about our trip to Rome. I can´t wait!

7. [to be] Over the moon extremely pleased and happy

  • We were over the moon when our daughter got accepted into Harvard.
